 ARTIST STATEMENT - WOODY
Sculptures
I have always appreciated the beautiful grains and texture in wood as I first made functional pieces from walnut slabs and burls that were on our own farmland.
This led to my carving of wood. Once I was retired, I was able to devote more time to each item and experiment more with different techniques.
Visiting the CACW carving show, museums, zoological gardens, various galleries and other shows, instilled a desire to further perfect my carving of wood sculptures.
From drives and walks in the country, in wildlife reserves, along Florida beaches, to Aransas, Texas' gulf reserve, at New Mexico's Bosque Del Apache and the Dakota and Nebraska parks and along rivers and lakes throughout the Midwest, I find an unending supply of ideas and inspiration.
A lifetime in farming, and being close to nature, has made me an appreciative observer of all types of wildlife. My carvings are my varied expressions of what I see. Although many of my carvings reflect nature, I am also drawn to working with the whimsical and fanciful.
Most of my artwork is done with small hand held power tools of various makes and sizes although I also do some freehand carving as well. For paints and finishes I utilize many different mediums and applications, always changing and adapting.
I have found the art of carving wood challenging yet fulfilling, and in the long term, a relaxing fun to do art form.
